The Select Vestry

The General Easter Vestry
The General Easter Vestry is the AGM of a parish. All parishioners over the age of 18years are eligible to attend. The business of the evening is to be presented with the parish accounts, which will have been already accepted and passed by the outgoing Select Vestry. The chairperson usually gives an Address and the Select Vestry and officers for the coming year are elected. There is no other business.

The Rector joined with Fr. Meehan to bless the new vehicle, which is part of a
fleet of minibuses which transport people to Waterford for their radium
treatment. This relieves friends and relatives from the onerous and time-consuming business of travelling up and down to Waterford five days per weeks for the duration of patients’ treatment. This wonderful facility is due to the generosity and dedication of a dedicated group.

School News –
Our school has had its evaluation for Green Flag status and we have invited
Minister for State at the department of Finance, Dr Martin Mansergh TD to
hoist the flag for us during the Summer term.
Mr Coleman from Christian Aid visited the school recently to be presented
with funds for a tubewell in the Third World. Bishop Michael visited the school on 16th January and was most impressed by the depth of knowledge the pupils had of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
The school is now the proud owner of a digital projector – the fruits of a very generous donation .

At the end of your month, please pass on the church keys, either to the next person on the list or to the Rector. A compost bin will be put in place at Old St. Mary’s in the coming week. Please put all plant material from arrangements into it – do not put oasis or any plastic into it!
School Board of Management Training –
Members of school Boards of Management undergo training to fulfil their statutory roles. This usually is organised on an area non-denominational basis, but this did not happen this time round. So, our diocese has had Canon Harvey, Abbeyleix trained as a trainer.

Hymnbooks & Prayerbooks –
There is a limited stock of hymn books and prayer books available in the tourist office at Old St Mary’s. They cost €20 each.
Safeguarding Trust –
We now have two prospective youth leaders who have done their Safeguarding Trust training. There appears to be a small group of people who don’t see the need for our child protection legislation. We would all prefer not to have to have it, but the reality is that it is absolutely necessary.
Some people appear to feel that having to comply with this legislation casts doubt on their character. There is also the feeling that as we are church members and, in some areas of the parish, everybody has known everybody else for a long time that it is a nonsense to have to comply.
The unfortunate thing is that over 80% of those abused physically, emotionally or psychologically are abused by family members or people known very well to the family. It is a shocking statistic and has led us to the requirement to do what we are doing. The law requires us to follow the state’s “Children First” and the Church’s law also requires us to do the same as every other organisation that works with minors.
It may seem “over-the-top” to require parents, brothers, sisters to do the training in the same way as everybody else, but we have only to look at our newspapers, televisions and listen to the radio to know that our world today is not a very safe place for our children.
I know it is difficult for some people to come to terms with all of this, but I would prefer to be “over-the-top” when it comes to the safety of our young people and those who volunteer to give them opportunities to grow into healthy adults who are not burdened by the horrors of child abuse than to take the risk of them experiencing what nobody should experience.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity –
The annual service took place in St. Mary’s, Irishtown. There was some confusion as to where it might be and it is hoped that next year there will be better organisation of this annual event. The rector was unable to attend due to a prior engagement and was represented by the Rev I. Knox

Bereavement
We sympathise with Tommy Whelan and his family on the death of his father on 25th Janaury. The Rector attended the funeral Mass in St Peter’s and St Paul’s. May he rest in peace.

Whist Drives
Drives take place in the hall of the school across the road from the Old St. Mary’s Church, Clonmel, on the 2nd Friday of each month from September – April.

Board of Management Training
Members of our school Board of management attended training provide by our diocese during the last few weeks. Some had attended training sessions provided by CPSMA, which did not meet with our bishop’s requirements. Canon Harvey, Rector of Abbeyleix trained as a facilitator for this purpose and he covered a lot of ground in what were rather long evenings. We learned ,but just a importantly, as with every training or conference session we met others who do the same work and that is just as important as learning legal and practical requirements. Thank-you to those who attended the meetings. Your commitment to our teachers and pupils’ welfare is most appreciated.

Confirmation 2009
It is now time to tell the Rector if you would like to be confirmed in 2009. Classes will be organised according to the availability of candidates. It is important that if you are being confirmed in school that you tell the Rector – one of the requirements of being confirmed in this diocese is that you provide the bishop with proof of your attendance at public worship during your preparation – you will usually be provided with an attendance card to be signed by whoever conducts worship on the Sundays you attend.
If you are an adult and missed out in you younger days, it is never too late!!

New Diocesan Youth Officer
Scott Evans is just beginning to take up his appointment as Youth officer for our diocese. His role is to work with those over 12years and upwards. I intend inviting him to meet parishioners of that age group in the near future. It will be an informal meeting, probably at the Rectory so that he can meet with young parishioners and hear what they might like him to organise in the parish or at diocesan level.
In order to do anything as a parish group, we need volunteers to lead a youth group!
Yes, if we want “something for our young people” we need people who are prepared to give of time and energy to lead. The Rector has considerable experience in youth work, but it is not possible for her or anybody else to do anything on their own!

Diocesan Magazine
Copies of the magazine have been ordered for the coming year. There are a few outstanding subscriptions. If you have not ordered yours, you may do so at any time. This is published once a month for 11 months of the year (August excluded). It brings you news of all the parishes and other information that is useful to all members of our diocese. It is a way of keeping up with what is going on.
For the moment, the Rector is organising it’s ordering and distribution. The annual subscription is €30. As subscriptions must be paid in advance, orders cannot be made if subscriptions have not been received.

Select Vestry Meeting
Will meet again on Monday, 12th January 2009 in Old St. Mary’s at 8.00pm. We did not have a quorum at our last meeting, so no meeting took place. If you cannot attend, please send in apologies in sufficient time for the meeting to be cancelled if necessary and so avoid having people travel unnecessarily.
Training for Sunday School Teachers & Parish Panel
Training for Sunday School Teachers & Parish Panel – Before undertaking the role of Sunday School teacher/leader, all those who have volunteered must attend training in Safeguarding Trust. The next training day is on Saturday, 24th January 2009 in the Clubhouse Hotel, Patrick Street, Kilkenny from 10.00am-12noon. You must let me know if you intend being there before 19th January. Panel members must also attend the workers session as they need to know what the workers have been taught. After a light lunch, there will be a further training session for the panel members.

You should contact the Rector of the Parish when you set the date of your wedding – you should not book the hotel first because the church may not be available on the date you plan.

all be in Lismore Cathedral for the licensing of James Mulhall as a priest of the Church of Ireland. James will serve in the Clonmel Union of Parishes as a Non-Stipendiary priest and will provide the Rector with much needed help. This will be a very important day for our parish and everybody needs to share in this celebration. James has served as a priest in another tradition and his return to ministry is in part due to your support and friendship. Few parishes get the opportunity to celebrate such an event, so, take up your pen and pencil in the date on your calendars, diaries or wherever else you post important dates to remember!
In the meantime, pray for James, Suzanne and little Jacob as they prepare to make big changes to their lives – pray for all training for ministry and commit yourselves to be open to the pastoral care provided for you by your Church.

The Dean of Lismore, the Very Rev. William Beare retiring on the 31st December 2008, having reached his 75th birthday on St. Stephen’s Day. We wish him and rose good health and a happy retirement in Cork.

The children took part in Christian Aid’s “Christmas Stocking” initiative
before Christmas. They had spent quite some time learning about the needs of people in poorer parts of the world and they held their own “in-house” bring and buy sale just before going on holiday before Christmas. We await news as to what they might be able to supply to a family; a goat, perhaps! Well done!!
The Christmas Concert was a huge success – wonderful music and acting! The venue was the GAA pavilion on Western road. Well done!!!

Old Palace
The Diocesan Council met for the 1st time in the old Bishop’s Palace in Kilkenny on 9th December. The Palace is now the headquarters of the Heritage council, but we still retain the right to hold 12 events in the building annually – it was much more pleasant and warm than St. Canice’s Library.

We began our celebration of Christmas with the Mid-night Eucharist
in St. Paul’s, Cahir. The Rev Arthur Carter celebrated and the Rector assisted.
Congregations in Fethard and Clonmel were very good. Mathilda Magner read the gospel in Fethard. And, in Clonmel, Bill & Kate Johnston played the violin during Holy Communion. Thank-you to our church decorators.
Tullaghmeelan was the venue for the service on the 28th. Tristan Buchwald and Sam Tarleton read, Sam, who is only six, shared a reading with his Dad. This service took the form of carols & readings with special remembrance of those who were baptised, confirmed and married during the year and of those who had died. We committed ourselves to trying harder during 2009.

Carol Services 2008
The choir of St. Mary’s, Irishtown joined us for the Carol Service in Old St.
Mary’s. Jonas, a student from Germany played Schindler’s List before the service
and played some Irish dance music at the end that kept people in the church. The Mayor, councillors and the Deputy Chariperson of the Co. Council attended, as did a large congregation.
A large congregation enjoyed the service St. Paul’s, Cahir on 14th December. Cahir Choral Society sang a selection of carols and Maggie Davis’ students provided added joy. Young Mr Thomas Grogan opened the service with the 1st verse of “Once in Royal David city” and brought the service to an end with a breath-taking rendition of “O Holy night” Thank-you to Hilary & her helpers for the refreshments.
On 21st December, a large congregation gathered for the Carol Service in Holy trinity, Fethard. The local clergy took part and the congregation sang joyously. Thank-you to the parishioners for the refreshments afterwards.
