Singing Group –
Fridays, 1st, 15th & 29th October@ 8.00pm in Old St. Mary’s – note change of dates due to other events on usual Friday evenings. New voices are always welcome –whether you want to sit near the organ or not! We practise well known hymns etc and learn new ones.
Confirmation 2011 -
It seems like only yesterday when we had our wonderful Confirmation in Service in Clonmel. Time moves on and it is now time to gather next year’s candidates. If you would wish to be confirmed, please talk to the Rector as soon as possible, preferable in the next few weeks so that I can give the Bishop an indication of how many people we might have. I prefer that people ask to be confirmed themselves.
Select Vestry Meeting –
Our next meeting is on Thursday, 14th October 2010 in St Paul’s Church, Cahir @ 8.00pm. A full attendance is expected.

Kids’ Club (formerly Bible Club!) –
For the under 12s – At last, we have a date by which all the vetting, training
and interviewing will be done with, for the moment and we can try to do some youth work, seriously. I have decided to call it “Kid’s Club” rather than what was started out with.
I hope parents will support it, bring their children along and consider becoming a helper (which requires all the above training etc)
Friday, 19th November 2010 in Old St. Mary’s Church, Clonmel @ 6.30pm to 8pm

Diocesan Synod –
Will be held in Wexford on, Wednesday, 20th October 2010 in the afternoon and evening. We have six members and hopefully all will be able to attend – it is of the utmost importance!
Lent & Easter 2011 –
The bishop has asked the clergy to make special arrangements for the observation of Lent and Easter next year. In the coming months plans for our parish will unfold. My former tutor from St. Deniol’s Library, Wales (Gladstone’s library), the Rev Dr Richard Buxton will be with us for part of Holy Week and Easter. Richard spent an overnight with us last week and is looking forward to leading us in prayer.
Part of our celebration next year will be to, hopefully, have a “Way of the Cross” in one of our churchyards – to that end I hope we can make the “pictures”/banners needed for it and Rev Richard & I hope that on holy Thursday we would have the washing of feet included in the evening commemoration of what Jesus did with his disciples on that evening long ago.
Other ideas are most welcome – maybe the other congregation besides Old St. Mary’s would like to take on board some of the things we have been doing in Clonmel in the last few years.

Bishops Appeal –
Thank you to those who supported the Appeal for Pakistan & the Niger.
Our good attendances at the Harvest Thanksgivings means that our
giving towards the normal fund will be good. As the Cahir collection at the Festival Flowers went to the Restoration Fund, the collection at the Carol Service will go to Bishops Appeal.

4th Sunday Family Service–
This has concentrated very much on the children in the Parochial School for practical reasons. We do need to include the other children in the parish, so, in conjunction with planning the Kid’s Club, the inclusion of all children in the parish will be a particular focus. But I need some help with this – perhaps parents might furnish me with their mobile/email details and we can start from there – email would work better as it would be more interactive. Come on, get involved for your children s’ sake – if we do nothing else we will ensure that everybody knows everybody else! Looking forward to getting a flood of emails!!
Drop in Coffee morning –
We have not had one of these for some time for all sorts of reasons. Our next one will be on Saturday, 23rd October 2010 from 10am – 12.30pm. Just come along, have a cup of tea or coffee & a scone, meet each other, have a chat and, if you wish leave a small donation to the Hall Fund.
St. Mary’s Parochial School (Model School) –
There are six pupils in Junior Infants this year and we welcome a new pupil to 5th class. The new digital projectors are being used and teachers are coping well with this new technology. The 1st newsletter arrived by email last Friday and is full of interesting and exciting news: The junior room have been very creative by doing some leaf rubbing. They thought
of this technique by thinking of autumn. Andrew and Scott Levie kindly came in on Friday. They taught us a lot about hockey skills.
Bishop Michael came into us last Friday. We asked him a variety of questions. Here is one of them: How do you get leprosy?.
Unfortunately, due to bad weather this week we could not have our ‘Safe Cycling’ day but we will be having it on the 4th of October (Monday week) if weather is suitable. Newsletter prepared by David & Ellen.

Clonmel Festival Weekend –
The Borough Council and the committee set up to steer this major event combined walled town day & the Agri Food Day into one busy weekend. There was a lectured Town wall walk at twilight by Margaret Quinlan, a medieval banquet in one of the car parks, workshops for children, demonstrations of old crafts & trades, a mini-zoo, stalls of all manner of things, information on a wide range of mostly environmentally related topics and demonstration and the sale of wonderful organically and “home” produced food. It was an enormous success and bigger and better is planned for next year.
Harvest Thanksgivings 2010 –
Cahir Harvest Thanksgiving was followed on the following Sunday by that in Tullaghmeelan. Some of the flowers & foliage came from Cahir; a sign of the increasing co-operating within our union of parishes. The Ven Michael Nuttall preached and got us to ocncentrate on our role in creation. As usual we all enjoyed refreshments in Knocklofty House Hotel.
Unfortunately our preacher for the service in Holy Trinity, Fethard had a family bereavement in the days before and the Rector stepped into the breach – something to do with bread. Once again there was co-operation between our congregations with some flowers from Tullaghmeelan finding their way to Fethard and with a goodly number of Clonmel parishioners present. Thank-you ladies for the refreshments afterwards.
The service in Old St. Mary’s, Clonmel, took the form of a “Songs of Praise”. It was very well attended with clergy & religious from the other parishes attending; as they did in Cahir & Fethard. Canon Patrick Harvey enthralled us with tales of the sea and our place in God’s creation. A special thank-you to David who played the organ at three of the services and to Pierce who played in Clonmel.
Thank-you to all the decorators & those who cleaned brass etc and provided refreshments after service.

Town Walls –
The town walls at Old St. Mary’s, Clonmel are undergoing extensive renovation, refurbishment and repair. It is hoped to make the walls accessible to the public. A license has been granted by the Representative Church body for access through the churchyard of Old St. Mary’s to enable this work.
Flowers & Cleaning –
We have relied too much on Fas keeping our churches, churchyards and halls clean for us. With the changes in Fas, the reality is that we are going to have to return to doing what we should have been doing anyway – keeping our churchyards and church tidy, clean and showing the world our committment to our parish. We need voluteers in all our churches – one or two weeks per year per person.
We also need volunteers for our flower rotas – we like to have flowers when we come to church, who does them? – parishioners. More volunteers, please!

Festival of Harvest Flowers, St. Paul's Cahir –
For those involved in the preparations for the Celtic Festival of flowers in Cahir the Summer months have been very busy. Thanks to the parishioners of St. Paul’s, this event was a huge success both financially and in bringing people to the church and providing an artistic occasion. To say that the church looked exquisitly beautiful would be the understatement of the year. It was truly an occasion to be remembered. The Very Rev Patrick Towers sermon lived up to expectations – challenging, bordering on the controversial and profoundly theological. I’m sure Mssrs Lyle & Tate never expected to have their golden syrup promoted in such a manner. Harry Carpendale & his group provided us with an evening of wonderful music at hte beginning. The final amount raised was €2,300 and thanks are due to the Rev Arthur & Hilary & the parishioners of Cahir and those who supported the event from other parts of the parish.
Training in Reading & Helping in Worship –
Those who were confirmed in recent years or adults who might be interested are invited to attend two practical sessions in Old St. Mary’s for training in being Ministers of the Eucharist, readers of the readings or prayers in worship on Fridays 22nd October & Friday, 26th November @ 7.30pm – this will include learning to use the microphone to best advantage.
Bereavements –
Tony Smith died suddenly on 23rd September. His Funeral will take place
in St. Paul’s, Cahir on Wednesday 29th . To his widow, Mary, his sons,
Paul & Stuart and their families we offer our sincere sympathy
May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
