Rev Iain Knox

Rev Iain Knox
After a long and trying illness, the Rev Iaian Knox died peacefully in South Tipperary General Hospital on the afternoon of 31st October 2012.

He was Rector of this parish from 1980-1996 and in recent years was Vicar Choral of Cashel Cathedral. Born in Londonderry in 1946, he served in Gweedore, Donegal before coming to Clonmel.

He, with his friend Rev David Crooks, were part of the enormous effort to update the lists of clergy of the Church of Ireland. His contribution was compiling lists and biographies of clergy who served in Cashel, Emly, Ferns, Waterford & Lismore in two volumes recently published.

He was, to the Rector, a valued friend and colleague and, in recent years, he contributed to the worship of Almighty God in this parish.

To his sister, Helen, and his stepchildren Eoin & Gillian we offer our sincere sympathy. May he rest in the peace of Christ.

School Applications –

The next date for application for entry in to the Parochial School is
1st March 2013 – however new families to the parish should contact
the school at 0526127876 when they arrive in the area.

Commissioning of Diocesan Readers –

Nine new Diocesan Readers will be commissioned by the Bishop in St Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny on Advent Sunday, 2nd December 2012 @ 7.00pm – present Diocesan Readers will be relicenced.

Note that Diocesan Readers are subject to the 75th Birthday retirement requirement, they may continue to serve after this in an informal arrangement only.

Bible Study –

At their “Leap Day” meeting with the bishop this year, the clergy of the
diocese expressed concern that many do not own an authorised version authorised of the Bible . The clergy made a commitment to address this problem.

Two of our churches now have copies of the version authorised for use in our churches. We have begun reading from the Bible rather than from sheets of paper in both churches.

In Old St Mary’s you will still get your sheet so that you cn practise at home. You should arrive a few minutes early when you are reading and, for a while, the readings will be marked with a post-it so that you can find it easily.

To enable you to understand what you are reading Bible Study sessions have begun;

These classes were particularly asked for by parents with children who are not attending our parochial school and were concerned about their children learning about their faith.

The Assessment –

The Church of Ireland is a self-governing Church within the Anglican
Communion and its clergy are supported financially & with housing by the parish in which they serve. Pastoral care, access to the Church’s sacraments, worship and Occasional Offices (Weddings, Funerals) is available to everybody who is Anglican, (Church of Ireland, Church of England etc) residing within the parish boundaries.
Funding for this comes from parishioners (you do not have to sign up, your eligibility comes soley from your residency in the parish).

Contribution to the Assessment is voluntary, but providing the Assessment to the diocese for the monthly stipend payments is obligatory.

You are invited to contribute, which may be in cash/cheque, direct debit or using our envelope scheme where you put a donation into your numbered envelope each week.
While a Thankoffering is usual for Baptisms , Weddings & Funerals and burial fees in our churchyards, the Assessment collection depends on goodwill & a desire to ensure continuance of the live ministry (clergy) in the parish.

The newsletter is not paid for from parish funds, it is the Rectors way of keeping some sort of communication going in an impossibly large geographical area.

Church of Ireland Gazette –

This is a weekly publication of the Church of ireland and keeps its readers up-to-date with national and international Church news. It and the church of Ireland gazette are the only two Anglican weekly publications. The annual subscription is €40 and is now due for the ocming year – talk to the Rector.

Diocesan Magazine –

Every parish in the Diocese contributes to this publication and it is a great way of seeing what happens in the South East. It is now time to order next year’s publication. The cost is €35 and must be paid when ordering. Talk to the Rector.

Message in a Bottle Project –

This is a Lion’s Club initiative and bottles and information
can be obtained from Mrs Patricia Matthews –
Phone/Fax: 052-6133626 Mobile: 086-8329157 www.fpconsultingltd.com

Bishop’s School Visit –

Bishop Michael paid a pastoral visit to the Parochial School
on Friday, 19th October 2012 – the children asked him to talk about food – it was very “interesting”.

New Bibles –

Old St Mary’s & Holy Trinity have had new lectern Bibles presented for use
in public worship. The one in Clonmel was presented by a friend of Old St Mary’s .
On Sunday, 14th October the Rector blessed the Bible in Holy Trinity and dedicated it to the memory of Seema Major. Her family took part in the Service. Thank-you, to our donors.

Holy Matrimony –

Aidan Regan & Sarah Gubbins were married in St Patrick’s Church,
Inishlounaght on Saturday, 20th October 2012. We wish them our
congratulations and every blessing as they begin their married life
together.

Harvest Thanksgiving –

The Harvest Thanksgiving took place in Tullaghmeelan on
14th October.
The church was very beautifully decorated and the Rector preached.
The congregation enjoyed refreshments in the Community Hall, Clogheen after the Service. Thank-you to all who contributed to a memorable occasion.
