Select Vestry Meeting –

Next meeting –Thursday, 24th May 2012 @ 8.00pm in Old St Mary’s Church, – if you attend a meeting and a date is set without your indicating you would not be available, it is assumed you will be attending!!!!

Singing Group –

Wed, 9th & Friday 25th May in Old St Mary’s Church of Irelan Parish Church, Mary St. Clonmel @ 8pm
New voices are always welcome –whether you want to sit near the organ or not! We practise well known hymns etc and learn new ones – the addition of bass/alto etc would enhance our efforts!

Bereavement –

We offer our sincere sympathy to Rev Arthur & Hillary Carter on the tragic death of his nephew.

We offer our sympathy to Malcolm Duncan and his family on the death of his mother, Jean. The Rector conducted the funeral service and commital at Urglin, with the Rector of Carlow’s permission, and was assisted by the Rev Leonard Ruddock.

Phyllis McCarthy was a native of Scotland and had spent 45 years in South Africa before coming to Newcastle with her husband 7 years ago. Her funeral took place at Mollough Cemetery, Newcastle on 20th March 2012. Our sympathy goes to her son, Derek.

We were all shocked by the sudden death of Brendan Walshe in hospital on Easter Eve. He served our parish as Diocesan Reader and as a student reader for soem time. He was a man of genial nature, of much talent and enthusiasm and enrgy. We offer our sincere sympathy to Katie & Uwe. May he rest in the peace of the Lord.

Bishop Michael’s Visit for Holy Week 2012 –

Those of you who were unable to join us during Holy Week as we followed Bishop Michael’s thoughtso n the Apostle Judas and experienced almost the complete choice of worship for holy Week missed an experience that often is a once in a lifetime. Numbers were much better than previous years and much good copmment has been passed on the “event”. For me the most meaningful evening was when we listened to the passion story in darkness , relieved only by the light of thirteen candles which were gradually extinguished as the story was read by the bishop and, after a noisy pause, the large “Christlight” was lit to signify our hope in the light of the risen Christ. I blew out the candles, so did not watch. But I am told that it was really efective. We will do “Tenebrae” again! Thank-you, Bishop!

School Applications –

The date for application has passed, but if you wish, you may contact Ms Wallace –telephone the school at 0526127876 and speak to Joan or Ms Wallace. This is our parochial school, under Church of Ireland management.

St Patrick’s Day –

The Rector conducted Holy Communion as Gaeilge in Waterford Cathedral on the morning of the national saint’s feast day. The Rev Arthur Carter did likewise in Cashel Cathedral on the same morning. Later in the day, the Rector conducted a bi-lingual service in Old St Mary’s.

Songs of Praise –

The service on Mother’s Day, in Clonmel, took the form of a “Songs of Praise”. Parishioners submitted the titles/numbers of their favourite hymns and the schoolchildren did likewise. The schoolchildren took an active part in the service as they always do on the 4th Sunday

Easter –

Our worship began with the ecumenical lighting of the Paschal candles at Old St Mary’s. The scouts provided the Easter Fire, complete with a gadget that allowed for a safer lighting of the candles.
The Easter Vigil followed in the churches of the town. Thank-you to those who provided the wonderful Easter decorations in our churches. The Christmas Tree that had become the cross in Old St Mary’s was particuarly tall and elegant this year.
Our four Confirmation candidates received Holy Communion on Easter Day in old St Mary’s in the presence of a large congregation that included extended family.

Concerts -

The Callino Quartet performed in Old St Mary’s on 23rd March. They performed some modern pieces that were very different from their usual repetoire. It was wonderful!
On 30th March we had a concert that was quite different from the week before’s. Morrissey & Danield, Louise morrissey and the Brock Mc Guire Band treated an appreciative audience with great raditional music and song.
Our next concert is on Friday, 18th May when the Glory Day Singers (Gospel) will perform in Old St Mary’s @ 8.00pm.

Farewell –

On 26th March 2012 the national flag was lowered for the last time at Kickham Barracks, Clonmel. Clonmel had been a garrison town since Cromwell had lost his campaign in Ireland when the Irish rebels opened the gates during the night to let his army in, but to find that the Irish leaders were gone down the River Suir to safety. Clonmel was the only place where Cromwell did not massacre the inhabitants. It was a sad day as the military parade passed through the town to enter the barracks for the last time. The effects of this closing of the army barracks will have enormous implications for a town already devastated by the recession.

Parish Witness 2012-2013 –

Our efforts to make our parish one to be proud of, to raise our assessment & to fund the day to day running of our parish continues. We all need to contribute – through sharing and using our talents, time, worshipping together and contributing what we can to further the spread of the gospel.
As a result of disestablishment in 1869, our Church has had to be self-governing and self-sufficient. There are many ways in which you can help – all ideas and willingness to offer time, talent etc is welcome always – phone 086-2750735.

Leap Day –

The active members of the clergy met with Bishop Michael to pray and share ideas on 29th February. One of the main things that came of our discussions is that the Constitution of our Church demands that we have a copy of the Bible (version in use at this time) in each church – that will be rectified in our parish in the near future. Offers of such a gift welcome! – Old St Mary’s has already received a lovely lectern copy

Concerts -

Friday, 18th May 2012 @ 8.00pm - Old St Mary’s, Church of Ireland Parish Church, Mary St, Clonmel - The Glory Day Singers (Gospel)

Confirmation

Confirmation Service in St Paul’s Church, Piltown on Sunday, 17th June 2012 @ 3.30pm – If you would like the bishop to lay hands on you in affirmation of your faith at this Service, please talk to the Rector.
The candidates from this parish received Holy Communion on Easter Day, before their confirmation, in accordance with the BCP rubric which has said since 1662 that they may as they were “desirous of being Confirmed”. It was for them , and their families, a very important occasion and was done as it should be as part of hte normal act of worship on the most important festival of the church’s year in the presence of family and fellow parishioners. Welcome to the Lord’s table to Tristan, Emily Ciara & Ellen

Safeguarding Trust & Youth Work –

The membership of the panel will change shortly after new members are vetted by the Gardai & trained. But in those areas where we were questioned about youth work we had mostly blanks. We need volunteers to get some youth activities going. If you are interested in helping set up Sunday School or some other type of activity for our young people, talk to the Rector. We have the facilities in Clonmel, Cahir & limited facilities in Fethard – we need help, but most of all we need to bring our children together to learn, play and become enthusiastic members of our Church – come on volunteEr, encourage your friends to join you and make our parish a more lively and friendlier place for our young people!
I have been sending text messages reminding parents of the 4th Sunday family service, but I don’t have a mobile number for every family – text me at 0862750735 or email me at frydayb@gmail.com and your family will receive a monthly encouragement to wroship!

LyricFm -

Many people enjoy listening to Lyric Fm, particularly in the car. Niall Carroll, Clonmel hopes to record 2 programmes for this radio station in Old St Mary's Church of Ireland, Clonmel, later in the year in honour of William Vincent Wallace's (composer of Mauritania), centenary. It would be a free concert and we would receive a fee. The evening would be in 2 parts, each of which would be broadcast as separate programmes

Future Activities tfor diary –

Sunday, 1st July 2012 – Outdoor Service @ Old St Mary’s & Barbeque at the Rectory (fundraiser)

Wednesday, 17th Ocotber – Catherine Leonard (violin) & Hugh Tinney in concert

Envelopes -

The new ones are now available – please support your Church. Thank-you to those who have now completed Year 1 and, especially those who have succeeded in getting the hang of putting something into each envelope. You don’t have to be a churchgoer to contribute in this way. We really so appreciate whatever – it all adds up – and this way relieves the pressure of having to be bothered by my missives just before christmas each year!

In Memory -

The bell of St Paul's, Cahir was rung at 2.20AM on Sunday 15th April 2012 in memory of 11 lost in the Titanic who had purchased their tickets in Cahir. The Hymn "Nearer my God to thee" was sung later that day, at service, as it is traditionally believed to have been sung by those on the Titanic as it sank.

Broadcast by RTE –

RTE Radio has asked if we would broadcast a Service of the Word from our parish on Sunday, 17th June 2012. The service would be pre-recorded sometime in May. As yet I have not date, but when, and if, this comes to fruition, some phonecalls will be made!! – no pictures this time, only sound!

Further Concerts-

There will be a concert during the Junction Festival in July and during Feile Cluain Meala at the end of August –dates and details later
