St. Mary’s Parochial School

St. Mary’s Parochial School (sometimes called “The Model School)
The children are learning about other Churches at the moment. On 20th January Fr Meehan PP, St. Mary’s, Irishtown, came to school and talked about The Roman Catholic Church. There were lots of questions and he gave them a night off from doing homework! – and got away with it!! The Rector is giving a short art course in the senior room at the moment. We are always looking for people who can give the children a taste of a variety of skills, languages, crafts etc. We also had the distinction of being the only national school in the diocese to open on 7th January.

Rural Dean’s Inspection –

It’s that time again when the Rural Dean, the Rev Isobel Jackson, will come to the parish and inspect all our buildings, registers, records, rectory and silver – signs all the paper records. Her purpose is to ensure we are looking after everything as we should and makes notes of things to be done, updates records of what we hold in the name of the Church and reports it all to the diocese and Church House. Her position here is that she is my substitute as I am rural dean, but, of course, cannot inspect my own parish. I do the same for her.

Quinquennial Inspection (5 yearly) –

We will be due for one of these in 2012 and this is like a vacancy inspection by the Architect of the Rectory – always something to be done and money to be spent! – just advance warning!

Sodor & Man Link –

The Bishop of Sodor & Man and his Rural Deans will visit our diocese during the 1st weekend in February. John and I will be hosting one of our visitors, but, unfortunately it will be for only one night and he will arrive late and leave early. I hope we will have a visitor for our link diocese shortly who will stay a day or two and we will be able to have a get- together .

Diocesan Magazine –

We are at the beginning of a new year and, unfortunately subscriptions are now due (€30) – ignore this if you have placed your 2010 order.
There is just one spare in Old St. Mary’s. We usually have two as “tasters” for those who might like to order. If you would like a copy, let me know, with your €30 and I will order – usually the diocesan secretary has spares, so we should be able to get copies of January for you as well.

St Mary’s Hall –

The toilets are almost finished, at last – the work provided occupation during the bad weather.

Tree Felling at Old St. Mary’s Clonmel–

A number of trees in the churchyard were either felled or Reduced in height recently as they were deemed to be dangerous – permission was granted by the RCB and they were not protected.

Repairs at Old St. Mary’s –

In the coming weeks, the roofs of the porch and the square tower will undergo extensive repairs. Both roofs are letting in large amounts of water and have been for some time. The works will be financed by monies that are specifically set aside for this type of work. We hope that we may be able to secure a grant towards the costs.

Confirmation -

Seven young people have signed up to be confirmed – classes will begin on 22nd Janaury and will take place twice monthly. The Diocesan Youth Officer will be helping the Rev James and myself and this may include a church service for everybody.
Confirmation will take place in St. Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore on Sunday, 27th June 2010

Bereavements –

Alan Wheeler, died after an illness on 27th December 2009 and his funeral Service took place in St. Paul’s Church, Cahir on Saturday, 2nd January 2010. The service was conducted by Canon George Cliffe who was assisted by Rev Arthur Carter. Cremation took placei n Cork We exrend our sincere sympathy to his widow and familiy.

David Brian Eccles died after a long illness, bravely borne, on 18th January 2010. He had spent much of his life here in South Tipperary; first in Tipperary Town and later here in Clonmel. He was an active member of his parish both in Tipperary and in Old St. Mary’s.
To his widow, Constance, his children Patricia and Tony and their families we offer our heartfelt sympathy. May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

Assessment/Sustentation.

The inclement weather prevented many form coming to church at Christmas and, so, many of your who would normally put your contribution to the maintenance of the live ministry in our parish on the plate ,were prevented from doing so. We find ourselves very short at present. Might I ask that you, if you have not made your contribution, you sent it to the Treasurer or Rector without delay by using the addressed envelope you received last autumn. (cheques to be payable to “Clonmel Union of Parishes” only)
